I am fascinated by the history of St Nick's. Part of my family's history is tied to St Nicks's. In order for my Grandfather, Maxwell Oberlies to marry my Grandmother Otillia (Tillie) Winters, he had to convert, so he was baptized and then they were married there in 1906. I believe my father, his 2 sisters and 1 brother went to school there. My mother & father were married there in 1936. My parents Leo & Dorothy Oberlies moved to New Jersey in the early 1940's but we used to visit alot and always walked from Hazel Street to go to St Nick's for Sunday mass. My last uncle was buried from St Nicks in 1980. Very good memories.
Also gives me a better insite to the Germans settling in Wilkes Barre, makes me want to know more.
Thank you.

Hi Joe,
What a wonderful recollection of your seminary days. It brought back memories for me as well as I spent a small amount of time in the same order.

I am from Hoboken and the Friars have served 6 generations of my family. These are wonderful men to whom I am indebted. It was refreshing to hear that you are still a franciscan at heart. Like you I am working my apostolate through my career. I work with the homeless as the President of the United Way of Hudson County. You may know my colleague Bruce Conway. My staff knows that our unofficial mission statement is the Prayer of St. Francis.

Let’s pray for the Cardinals as the Holy Spirit, through them, select a new Pontiff. I am sure you are aware that the Cardinal from Ghana is an alumnus of St. Anthony on the Hudson.

Maybe in a future blog you can tell us about the ghosts in the Manor House or the ghost of Fr. Henry in Raquette Lake. LOL

I wish you well.
Pax et Bonum

Great information! Do you remember the intro. theme song for the "Night Beat" program? I listened to that every night. They drew my name once and I won a 6-pack of COKE. I was upset because my parents wouldn't spend the gas to drive into Fairmont so I could present my official "Night Beat" card and pick up my prise. Would love to hear from you.

I'm a Postulant with the Conventual Franciscans in California. Next year, God willing, I'll be a Novice at the interprovincial Novitiate in Mishawaka, Indiana.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog, and I especially liked the photos. I can't fathom the property falling into ruin. The building was very majestic looking. Something's definitely happened within the Catholic Church since you were a Novice!

You wrote: "I personally came away from the experience with a much greater appreciation for the freedoms I have as an American citizen. I also have a much greater respect for the people of Central and Eastern Europe of my generation who endured so much suffering at the hands of the Nazis and the Russians. I have a deeper understanding of the horror and evil of the perpetrators of the crimes of the holocaust and of the need to keep the memory alive so that these crimes will never happen again."
I think these are important insights. My experience is that a lot of Americans do not realize that they take for granted things that others still struggle to have (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, for example). In telling Polish jokes, people don't remember that once the Poles stood between Europe and chaos or that the wing design of modern fighter planes was a Polish invention. Among the myriad wonderful things done by Czechs, people don't realize that they invented the sugar cube (of all their inventions this is surely a best beloved one) or that the original Budweiser beer came from there (maybe a close race for Best Beloved first place). I had friends (most of whom have passed on now) who had number tattoos on their arms and who only missed death at Nazi hands by luck, or whose whole families except themselves had gone up in smoke. One of my dearest friends is a Holocaust memorializer, passing on the story of a survivor for new generations.
Thanks for writing that great account of your trip.
